THCa Flower vs THC Flower: What the Difference Actually Is

People ask this at the counter most days, usually phrased as whether one is the real thing and the other is not. They are the same molecule at two stages of its life. The difference is chemistry, and once you see it the labels stop being confusing.
The short version
THCa is what the plant makes. It is an acid form, and it is what is sitting in the jar. Apply heat and the acid group comes off, which chemists call decarboxylation, and what is left is THC.
So a jar labelled THCa flower and a jar labelled THC flower can be describing the same material. One is telling you what is in there now. The other is telling you what it becomes.
Why the lab report shows both
Pull up any Certificate of Analysis on our site and you will see separate lines for THCa and delta-9 THC, plus a figure usually called total THC. That third number is not a measurement. It is a calculation, because not all of the THCa converts, so the formula applies a conversion factor rather than simply adding the two.
This is why two shops can describe similar flower with different-looking numbers. One is quoting THCa, one is quoting total THC. Neither is lying. They are quoting different lines of the same report.
What this means for what is on our shelf
Everything in our flower range is hemp, grown mostly in California and Colorado with a small amount from here in North Carolina, and every batch has a third-party lab report attached to it. The COA is the document that matters. A strain name tells you very little, and research has repeatedly found that strain names correspond poorly to what is actually in the jar.
What we would rather you look at is the cannabinoid profile and the terpene profile on the report. Those are measurements of the specific batch in front of you.
On terpenes, carefully
We group flower by terpene profile in the shop, into four families we call Sun, Moon, Sky and Fire. It is a way of organising a shelf, not a promise.
The honest position is that the evidence connecting terpene profiles to how people describe their experience is preliminary. What someone expects to feel shapes a great deal of what they report. So we will tell you that a batch is myrcene-dominant and that people in that group often describe it a particular way. We will not tell you how it will make you feel, because nobody can.
Storage, since it comes up
THCa degrades with heat, light and time, which is why flower is stored in opaque containers out of the sun. A jar left on a hot windowsill is slowly converting on its own. That is also why the date on the lab report matters. A COA from a year and a half ago is not describing today's jar.
Buying it
Our staff at Castle St, Market St and Leland will show you the lab report for any jar before you buy it. If you would rather not make the trip, we ship anywhere in North Carolina, usually arriving in one to three days. The shipping page covers how that works.
