What the Number on a 5mg Gummy Actually Means

What the Number on a 5mg Gummy Actually Means

Walk along the edibles case and the numbers jump around. 2mg, 5mg, 10mg, 100mg on the package. Here is what those figures describe and, more usefully, what they do not.

It is a measurement, not a grade

A 5mg gummy contains five milligrams of THC per piece. That is it. It is not a tier, a quality level, or a rating of anything. It is a quantity, and the only reason you can trust it is that an independent lab checked.

That last part is the part worth caring about. The number is printed by the manufacturer. The Certificate of Analysis is produced by a third-party lab, and it either agrees with the package or it does not. We ask for one on every batch of every edible we stock, and inconsistency between batches is the most common reason we stop carrying a line.

Per piece or per package

This is the labelling trap. A package might say 100mg on the front and contain twenty 5mg pieces. Another might say 10mg and mean per piece, with ten pieces in the tin. Both are accurate. They are answering different questions.

Look for the words per piece or per serving, and look at the piece count. If a label makes you do arithmetic to work out what one gummy contains, that is a choice the manufacturer made.

Why lower doses took over the case

Several years ago the edibles case was mostly 10mg and up. Now a good share of what moves is 2mg and 5mg, and the beverage cooler sits mostly in the same range.

The reason is who is buying. A lot of our customers are in their forties, fifties and sixties, often new to this, and a low measured dose in a single piece is a much easier thing to understand than a jar of flower. You can read the number, and the number is the whole product.

What we make ourselves

About half the edibles case is made by us, in our kitchen at Castle St, a few feet from where you check out. Gummies and fudge, in small batches, with the dose printed clearly on every package.

The rest comes from brands we have eaten ourselves and trust to dose accurately. Indigo and Cycling Frog are two of them. Small-batch production is harder to keep consistent than people assume, which is exactly why the lab report exists.

Questions we cannot answer

Customers sometimes ask which one to pick for a particular reason. We will not answer that, and any shop that does is telling you something it cannot know. What we can do is show you exactly what is in it and exactly what the lab found, which is a more useful conversation than it sounds.

Come into Castle St, Market St or Leland and ask, or have it shipped anywhere in North Carolina from the shipping page. Same-day dispatch, usually one to three days to arrive.

21 and over, with valid government-issued ID, every time.
